Dear jean jacket,

I love you. Not a romantic love, obviously. But I strongly admire your form and function. I own three of you: dark blue, faded blue, and coral. You are what I call my signature look.

I didn’t realize regular people could have signature looks until I was out at a bar one night and I complimented this woman on her black leather jacket. It wasn’t a denim jacket so obviously not as cool in my book, but this woman owned it and looked great in it. I said “nice jacket” and she said “thanks , it’s my sig “ as in it’s her signature look. She said, “that’s a really cute jacket, that’s your sig!” she was right! I’m not going to go as far to say it’s my “sig” but it’s definitely a major part of my wardrobe during the months of September through April. And some evenings throughout the summer… ok it’s fine to use jean jackets all year round. Actually that’s what makes them so appealing. I can wear you with leggings, slacks,  maxi dresses and skirts, short dresses, capris, literally any bottom can be paired with a jean jacket. Also tops, blouses, tanks, t shirts, just about anything. You are the perfect clothing item for me.

Denim jackets go beyond age and gender. I wore denim jackets throughout my childhood and gift them to my nieces. Men can wear jean jackets just the same. Little boys in jean jackets look downright too cool for school. The sherpa lined ones are amazing for winter and layering. This is Cleveland after all.

I’m comforted in a jean jacket. It’s thicker than a light hoodie or raincoat, but thinner than a winter coat. It’s just right in between. The seasons to look adorable in a jean jacket are all the seasons. It is my shell, my armor. My jean jackets fit under my fleece zip ups too. I love a good layering system for staying warm. Did I mention this is Cleveland?

Denim jackets have nice pockets too. Exactly where pockets should be placed. Everyone needs and should always have pockets. Why do men’s clothing have more pockets than women’s? All clothing needs pockets. Another reason jean jackets are the perfect item of clothing. The collar can be popped up to shield from the wind but also to look like James Dean in Rebel Without a Cause and he was a fox. So a jean jacket is a clear path to looking like a fox.

From cowboys out west to rock n rollers in the 80s, all the way to classic woman with a dress today, denim jackets are a must for any wardrobe at any time.

So denim jacket, thanks for keeping me warm and looking good. I promise to always take care of you and wear you with pride.

What item of clothing is part of your signature look?
