If you know a Maury, you know we love “Chocolate and Biscuits.” We brag “chocolate and biscuits,” but what we mean is Grandma Weezy’s famous chocolate gravy poured over fluffy hot Pillsbury biscuits served alongside sausage links, with a big glass of milk or a nice hot coffee for a fulfilling savory and sweet breakfast on a cozy Saturday morning.

“Chocolate!? For breakfast ?! ”
That’s what people say when they hear us ask if they’ve ever had chocolate gravy.
Like we are somehow crazy for having chocolate for breakfast.
Count Chocula AND my Granny said it was okay, so we are good here.

It is a family favorite that has been passed down from my Great Grandmother Varcy of the hollers of Arkansas to my “nice” Grandma Louise in the hills of Cincinnati. Then to my dad, David. He shared it with us, and now I share it with my Enzo here in Cleveland. This century old family recipe has made its way over the country and with each generation our fondness only grows stronger.
It’s my granny’s personality in a nutshell. Sweet and something to be savored. I have seen similar recipes pop up on cooking shows and online, and I love seeing it. It is validation we aren’t crazy for making chocolate gravy and other people in fact enjoy this too. This is my version. I hope you enjoy it.
Tips:
- Whisk it, whisk it good
- Clumps are no good and it’s difficult to avoid them, hence the whisking
- Sift your flour, not always necessary but it makes it smooth if you’re worried about clumps
- When Granny gave me her recipe she just gave me a list of ingredients and their amounts. I put together the instructions based on my experiences.
- Serve this on my favorite biscuits: Pillsbury Grands from the freezer section. Biscuits from the can are not the same. Homemade is a blog for another day.
- Serve this with your favorite breakfast sausage and please dip the sausage in the chocolate.

Ingredients:
4 tablespoons cocoa powder
1 ½ cups of white sugar
8 heaping tablespoons of flour
4 cups of 2% milk
1 tab of butter
2 teaspoons of vanilla extract
Instructions:
- In a bowl combine the dry ingredients: flour, sugar, and cocoa. Mix well until there are no clumps.
- In a large skillet pour 4 cups of milk and begin to warm on low/medium heat.
- Add the dry mixture to the milk one tablespoon at a time vigorously whisking continuously so it blends nicely avoiding clumps.
- When it seems almost to the gravy consistency desired add a big tab of butter and 2 teaspoons of vanilla and finish stirring.
- Serve over warm biscuits.
Thanks for reading, enjoy.
Love,
Amanda
